i have dyed my hair plenty of time by myself and it turns out pretty good. But depending on how you want the color to turn out you can leave it on for 10 extra Min's but i don't recommend no longer than that unless you know your hair, try not to get it on your skin because it may stain for 2 days or so, its alright to touch your hair as long as you read really read the directions carefully. also don't scratch your hair before you do so b/c it will burn , it is like a Perm but instead of straighting your hair its coloring it

you should never personally die your hair, the die that you buy from the stores are cheap replicants of salon dies, just go back and get it professionally died, believe me u'll regret it if you do it yourself it gets dry and you loose your texture %26amp; volume

Oh please! Go ahead and dye your hair at home, it's not going to kill it too much if you're careful with it.

Basically, follow the directions on the box. Choose something that's very gentle, with low ammonia. If you're worried about damage, go with a "non-permanent" dye-- since you're going darker it will be permanent and uses absolutely no ammonia.

My tips:

1. Smear vaseline around your hairline ALL the way around your head, especially the forehead and ears. It will prevent the dye from staining your skin.

2. Dye the tips last, with only about 10 minutes left to go for the rest of your head. Your tips are the dryest part and will take the color much more quickly. (This is only if you are using a permanent hair color with ammonia.)

3. Use a good dye-- don't go for the cheapest. Take the time and spend the extra 5 dollars to pick something you really like.

4. Be careful with splattering in your bathroom-- it WILL stain your walls.

5. After you rinse, use a deep conditioner and then wrap hair in a plastic shower cap. Do some cleaning, exercising, whatever. The heat from your head generated during physical activity will cause the conditioner to permeate more thoroughly.

6. MOST IMPORTANTLY- Dye your hair when the hair helpline on the box is OPEN!!!! They can help you if there's a problem and they are very nice people.

Good luck!!!

I think Elizabeth S. gave you the best answer. I have been dying my hair for the last 15 years myself. I trust my hair to no one but me!! I have tried many brands and the one that I like the best is Revlon colorist. I just changed my shade to a darker brownish red from light auburn, and this brand worked beautifully. My hair feels healthier and it looks nice and shiny.

I hope that this helps. Good luck and have fun...
