Tips please on brushing long hair cats?

I adopted woody in may from cats protection he's a long hair ginger tabby with 3 legs (accident involving a car apparently).

I'm finding it increasingly difficult to keep his fur neat cos he totally hates being brushed, and I'm not sure what to do to get him to accept it.

It's got to the point where no matter how I try to brush him he goes 'mental' just seeing the brush and gets ready to either run or attack.

Any tips /advice on how I can get him to accept being brushed would be a huge help 'cos I don't want his fur to get matted.

thanx!!

If he freaks at the sight of the brush start again with damp hands. The dampness will pull any loos hair out without pulling his skin. If he is a "ginger" he will have very sensitive everything. Be nice and talk some to him. One of my cats now comes and sits on me when I'm in the bath. He has his own face cloth, we do his face then paws then his body HE LOVES IT!. (I, on the other hand am not so keen, I hate "bits" in the bath,. It's no fun soaking in a tub full of ginger/white cat hair Ugh!)

Use a damp brush, it helps to cut through the lugs easier keep the moggy clean at all times and give it plenty of TLC,more so when brushing ittakes a bit of time for it to grt used to it but please keep at it.

why dont you get one of those cat hair brushes you put over your hand.then he will think you are stroking him.some cats have sensitive skin and some brushes hurt them.if he is long haired you have to do it as often as you can otherwise it will go into knots and tufts then youll never get it brushed

have you tried a grooming mitt? Its a glove with a brush type attachment on the palm so your cat thinks it is just being stroked:

Or this might work:

Buy a different brush that he does not recognise and start to do a little bit each day, but stop when the cat gets annoyed. Do it really lightly (even if its not actually doing much brushing!) to start with, until he thinks its like being stroked and he will like it, then over days/couple of weeks get firmer. I always hold the top of the fur when trying to pull the brush through a tough knot as this releases the pressure where the fur is attached/pulling to his body!

Try not to get angry with your fluffy cat. I had a fluffy kitten who didn't like a brush and my mum looked after him for 4 weeks and it ran away because she tried brushing it every time she went near it :(

Good Luck

hi i have to Persian cats both long haired one hates to be brushed the other don't mind. what i do is kneel on the floor on a carpet and put him between my legs, head facing away from me. then i just brush his front ,legs and back. i think he fills more safe when he is between my legs. the other one i do the same, but she is more difficult. she does get a lot of knots so i have a dog shaver and i just shave the knots out she don't seem to mind it. best to brush them every day even twice best of luck.

cats never forget!

i am afriad you will have to start all over again with grooming

he now knows whats coming

start with getting the brush out and placing some of his treats near it

that way he will get used to going near the brush

get a mitt ( its a brush in a glove)

and stroke him very gently while he is relaxed

dont make a big thing about moving him or anything

this is going to take time to re train him that the brush wont hurt

try twice a day, if he gets over excited leave it dont push it with the brush

find a place on him where he likes it, try under the chin or along his spine

you will have to use treats or food to distract him while you try

best of look

You can try to brush him a little bit daily to help rid of excess hair, when he gets upset, then stop. You could try to train him by giving him a treat before an after the brushing, then he might actually start to enjoy it.

Take him to the groomer's every few months if he starts to get matted. They know the proper technique to brush out matts or shave them off. Our groomer only charges like $15 - $20.

I am in sympathy with you I have nine Maine coons and 4 Norwegian forest cats

One of my Maine coons is pure white fluff ball and he hates being groomed I mean HATES my head and arms show the scars he has been groomed since he was a kitten but still hates it I have tried grooming mitts every thing

Once every 6 mths i pay 鎷?3.00 for the vet to sedate him and de mat him

some cat just will not tolerate being brushed and no two cats are the same , his brother loves to be groomed and rolls over on to his back so you can brush his tummy

sorry cant be much help just a gentle gentle approach give a little brush then feed him a tit bit (treat and keep repeating this so he associates brushing with yummy food.

It may just work it may not
